Olympic Record: 2.03m Harold Osborn, United States, Paris, France, July 7, 1924
The final, held on a spongy take-off area, had 18 men and lasted five hours. Five men made 1.91 including reigning champion Osborn, though the ’24 bronze medallist Lewden had to be content with 1.88. All the principals remaining were “western rollers”, with the exception of the springy Toribio, who used the old “eastern cut-off”. Only King was able to clear 1.94, and he then had three failures at 2.00, just 3 mil- limetres beyond his best. King went through 1928 undefeated, and had six of the top eight jumps of the season. Places two to five were decided in a jump-off with the bar raised and lowered five times.
