History Women Shot Put
Lisovskaya - who had improved her own world record to 22.63 the previous June - was given a scare by Neimke. The 21 year-old GDR putter produced a personal best of 21.21 in the second round. Lisovskaya responded with 21.16 in the third but did not get in front until her 21.24 in the fifth.
Though her margin of victory was not particularly impressive, the Soviet putter must have been relieved to have won the gold. She had been the favourite at the previous year’s European Championship but placed only ninth.
World Record: Natalya Lisovskaya, Soviet Union 22.63m 07.06.87 Moskva, Soviet Union 7th June 1987.
