With the wind gauge barely registering at 0.2 (it was 0.1 for his world record 9.79) Greene was timed at history’s second fastest time of 9.80 despite a flawed start. “The beginning of it was very shaky, but I didn’t panic,” he said. “The first two or three steps I was stumbling, but I was able to gather myself.” He thus became only the second man (after Carl Lewis) to successfully defend a global 100 title. Surprisingly, in view of the winning time, he was pushed hard by Surin, at 32 in the form of his life and contesting his fifth World Championships 100m final. No man before has run 9.84 and lost, Surin matching fellow Canadian Donovan Bailey’s Commonwealth record.
With Ato Boldon a non-starter and Fredericks scratching from his semi, the bronze was seized by Chambers who, at 21, became the youngest World Championships medallist in this event at that time. His 9.97 ranked him behind only Linford Christie on the European & UK all-time list. Greene, who covered the first half of the race in 5.55 and the second in 4.25, reached the 60m point in 6.39 just behind Surin (6.38) with Chambers third in 6.41.
