The most impressive qualifiers were Patton (20.03) and Buckland (20.06). Times in the final were slowed by cool, wet conditions experienced on the evening of August 29. No-one got clear on the bend and the five men in lanes 2-6 were virtually level at the start of the straight. Capel (lane 6) then edged in front though Patton – who was nursing an injured left knee – closed to within one hundredth. Suetsugu won Japan’s first global sprint medal since 1952. Edmonton winner Kentéris was a late withdrawal.
