Tatyana Lebedeva, winner in 2001 and 2003, was the prohibitive favourite, but an Achilles tendon injury meant she had to withdraw from the final. Aldama led with 14.72 at the end of round one, but four jumps later she was third behind Pyatykh (14.75) and Savigne (14.73). Smith took the lead in round four at 14.91 despite taking off 39.8cm behind the board. She progressed to 15.11 (5.31 hop, 4.60 step and 5.20 jump) in the next round . Both Savigne (14.82) and Pyatykh (14.77) reacted well, but Smith was clearly superior on the day, and she finished with 15.01 to consolidate her victory, with only Pyatykh (14.78) improving in the final round. Smith stood on the medal podium with a crutch to support an ankle she had injured during the final.
