Australia finished first (1.) and United States second (2.).
Australia disqualified because all swimmers jumped into the pool before all teams finished.
United States disqualified for improper changeover. Later FINA bureau (2001, Bangkok) decided to grant a second set of gold medals for United States, without changing the official results.
United States delegation fielded a protest, saying that a touchpad that showed Julie Hardt left the starting before Cristina Teuscher touched the wall during the second change had been malfunctioning all night.
"We looked at video, and it seemed that the change was OK", said the poolside referee Andriy Vlaskov, Ukraine, who made the initial decision on the disqualifications. "It might have been due to a soft touch."

FINA JURY OF APPEAL DESICION
ON WOMEN 4x200 FREESTYLE RESULTS
The FINA Jury of Appeal met today, 26 July 2001 in Fukuoka (JPN), to study the protest of Australian Swimming Inc., Amateur Swimming Federation of Great Britain and Japan Swimming Federation with regard to the results of the Women’s Final 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay held on 25 July 2001.
1. The Jury of Appeal decided unanimously that the Australian team who participated in this event be disqualified due to the clear violation of the FINA Rule SW 10.11 by their swimmers jumping into the pool before all teams had completed the race.
2. The Jury of Appeal also decided unanimously to uphold the protest submitted by the Amateur Swimming Federation of Great Britain and Japan Swimming Federation concerning the final result of the relay.
The Jury of Appeal found that the time system worked perfectly during this race. The announced tolerance on judging for the relay take-off is 0.03. The tolerance recorded on the automatic equipment for the USA team was 0.06. Consequently the Jury of Appeal rule that the USA team is disqualified.
